Internet Addiction

Addicted to the internet? The media loves the idea; of course, the media wants all of us to be sick! Just look at all the ads for drugs and treatments that clog the airways (and your computer screen!). Now, the American Journal of Psychiatry is getting into the game by suggesting that Internet Addiction be made an "official" diagnosis. Check this out at mindhacks.
Do you meet the criteria? Maybe we could do a little group therapy on this one!

I think that they are right about the internet addiction. I have a younger family member whom at one point couldn't go a day without getting online. Then when she got online she would stay uthere until the next morning. She also developed anger and depression when she couldn't get online.

the internet can be a real addition i do agree with that.

I really like what this person has to say regarding the subject of internet "addiction". I really enjoy using the internet, and sometimes if I haven't gotten on for a while I want to get on. But the same goes for riding my horse, and I'm not considered "addicted" to horseback riding, I just enjoy it alot!

Like everything in life it is possible to become addicted. Too much of one thing can become habit forming and when you don't get enough of it you have withdrawal symptoms.

I think that you really can get addicted to the Internet! I also have a younger cousin who stays on the computer the entire time he is at his house. When you do things for long periods they very possibly can become addicting.

The internet is an addiction. But that's because you can find anything you want to on the internet.

I agree, the Internet can be very addicting. As I was reading the article, I immediately thought of a classmate who may be "suffering" from this addiction. In spite of the teachers wishes, he continues to find time to go online. He does often seem upset to not be able to get online.

It is amazing what a computer is capable of doing. My husband stay on the computer late nights. A parrot would come on and tell him, "Dave, Do you ever go to sleep?" That meant for him to get off the computer and go to bed. The internet can be addicted if you let it become one.

I think the internet is helpful, but it can also be very addictive.
Before you know it, you are spending hours on the internet, instead of spending time with your family, friends.

Internet addiction is real. I have a friend that praticly lived on the computer she would be on once she got home from school until she went to sleep. I really dont go on the computer much but when i do i get done what i have to then get off. Other, as mentioned in the article have a problem, which stated is linked to another brain defect.

The internet can become very addicting for some. I think everyone knows someone that stays online for excessive hours at a time. Im just surprised its taken this long for them to shed light on the realization that it is a real addiction given the fact that the internet has been around for years.

This guy has a really good point. I mean, I kind of agree that people can be addicted to the internet because it's become such a huge part of society but I also think that there are much worse addictions that people occupy themselves with. I liked the author's perspective on the whole "internet addiction."

I think internet addiction is a problem. I know people who cant go a day without getting on the internet to check their facebook, myspace, or email. Also, I found it interesting that people with internet addiction have other mental illnesses.

Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, Google, etc. How do I find time to visit all these sites and do my school work? I guess if you are going to be addicted to something. it might as well be the internet, at least you could get an online degree or something. How funny is it we are commenting on this addiction on an internet blog? Ironic!

there can be an addiction to anything nowadays, what makes this addiction so much worst than the others you dont see people overdosing on the internet. when people are able to sniff internet straight to their brain i will be more concerned.

Internet addiction is a pretty real thing kids now a days will never get off the internet. especially with myspace and facebook. There "lives" are on the internet.

I see both sides. I myself love to get on facebook but only to stay in touch with those who have gone to college. I use the internet is moderation so I do not have any of the side effects described in the article. I can understand how shy people could become addicted to it though and how it could possibly change their mood. This was very intresting. -April Woolard (WHS)

I believe that the internet can be very addicting! I personally go through spells every now and then where I will stay online for a couple of hours just looking up random stuff!

Websites like myspace can be addicting. I admit, I get online a lot. But I don't think I'm addicted. It doesn't kill me to go a few days without checking it.

Internet Addiction can cause many problems in someones life. There are various websites that can be visited that help bring along the addiction, such as gambling and the chat rooms. I never thought internet addiction could exist, untill i saw this website.

Obviously I do not know anyone who is addicted to the internet as many people said they did know someone with this problem. I realize that sometimes I get on the internet and mess around but I am far from addicted its just somthing to do. I guess its the same for people that are addicted its something to do but it turns into all they do.
