Are drugs always the answer?

That's certainly what the drug companies and many others would like us to believe! A recent article and interview reported on recent research comparing the effects of antipsychotic drugs on the aggressive behavior of persons with mental retardation. As long as I've worked in clinical practice, these drugs have been used to reduce this behavior. Or so they thought! This article and audio interview with the researcher tell us that these drugs don't work at all. The placebo was the best treatment! We're also learning that antidepressants are not always the wonder drugs that we would wish they were. Psychological treatments may still be better and may offer fewer negative side effects. This article from Consumer Affairs explores that issue.

People place too much emphasis on drugs whether they be prescibed or not, or maybe its just money. It is a billion dollar industry, and it doesn't surprise me, but I can drink a 24oz. beer and have a headache dissapear long before some aspirin will get rid of it. Some docs and I use that term loosely had me on risperdal, zoloft, and lexipro, and the only difference I felt after two weeks was that I would sleep and forget more. After a month I couldn't stand anyone (which is why I was put on them). I flushed the pills and a few weeks later I was back to "normal." I feel that people always want the easy way out so they get prescriptions for whatever they want to change. but not all people I have to admit their are some who would rather meditate than medicate.

No matter what you go to the doctor complaining about it seems they always decide to write a prescription. You have a hurt toe they write a prescription, a stomach ache, there's another one. That is the only way doctors can seem to get their money. Perhaps they have an award ceremony at the end of the year to see who gave the most prescriptions over the years.
SAY NO TO DRUGS, EVEN PRESCRIPTIONS MADE BY A DOCTOR!

People always trying to find a scapegoat and someone or something to blame thats why they turn to drugs. I dont like the idea of drugs and I'm very scared to take prescription drugs. I thank God for allowing me to live a healthy life so far. Esther WIlson

Drugs to help treat certain problems or symptoms are wonderful but it seems the more research done over time, these drugs have more increased risk and do more harm than good.

One such drug like antibiotics are great as they have helped save many lives. On the other hand, if taken too often, the body can become immune and the drug is not as helpful. Antidepressant drugs are used to treat depression but can sometimes make depression worse. Birth control pills can have some benefits and help aid in preventing some cancers if used over a period of time, but there are also increased risks if not used correctly and increase risk for stroke associated with blood clotting.

We sometimes have no choice as these drugs save and prolong life but sometimes cause irreversible side effects as well. We have to take chances in life and hope that the benefits will outweigh the risks.

I do not think drugs are always the answer. some doctors think that medication is needed to help children calm down and act civilized. The child does not need medication that child needs a stick across their hiny! Then they will act like they have some sense

My parents raised me on the fact that drugs are never the answer, and I have always stuck with that.

I feel that if someone has a problem and has tryed everything and turn to medications as a last resort then thats ok. I just think people should not always rely on prescription or non-presription drugs as the anwser. Honestly is the risk of all the side effects worth it. You get one drug for something and then get another one to fix the side effects from the first drug. I just dont see the point.

People are often too quick to turn to drugs to "fix the problem" rather than taking other alternatives. Doctors are also too quick to write that prescription based on what the patient tells them.

I do believe that doctors are quick to write perscriptions to fix a "medical" problem but sometimes I believe that it is needed. Depending on the promblem I think depends wether or not that person may need medications!-Jade Godley
